Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Fellowship

About

Madigan Army Medical Center and the University of Washington (Center on Human Development and Disability and Seattle Children’s hospital) offer a Fellowship in Developmental Pediatrics designed to prepare qualified applicants for the practice of interdisciplinary developmental medicine in the military services and the civilian sector.

This program is designed to give the Developmental Pediatrics Fellow a comprehensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children with developmental disabilities.

The length of training is three years with two years at Madigan and a third year at the University of Washington. Training is primarily interdisciplinary with an emphasis on the management and coordination of comprehensive care for children with special health care needs. Each fellow actively participates in a broad range of multidisciplinary clinics:

  • Behavior Intake Clinic
  • Neuromuscular Clinic
  • Spina Bifida Clinic
  • Infant Toddler Clinic
  • Cleft Palate Clinic
  • Genetics/ Dysmorphology Clinic
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder Clinic
  • Fellow’s Continuity Clinic
  • Pediatric Behavior Clinic (includes ADHD & Disruptive Behavior Disorders)

Individual patients are assigned to each fellow allowing them the opportunity to participate in long term management of complex cases and to better understand the natural progression of developmental disorders. Ongoing didactic lecture series in Genetics, Psychopharmacology and Neurology all contribute to the fellow’s expanding knowledge base.

Training includes on site interaction with professionals in Developmental Pediatrics, Genetics/Dysmorphology, Child Psychiatry, Pediatric Psychology, Social Work, Speech/Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Pediatric Orthopedics, Pediatrics Neurology, Pediatric Urology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Nutrition, Care Coordination as well as other specialists who may be included for a particular child and family.

The program prepares the military pediatrician for the practice of developmental pediatrics as a director of an interdisciplinary developmental clinic at a remote site, as well as a staff physician at a military training center. As such, the program is broad based, covering all areas of developmental pediatrics and includes training in the various Department of Defense and service specific programs for children with special health care needs (Exceptional Family Member Program, DoDEA Schools, Early Intervention Developmental Services). The graduating fellow will participate in programs to refine skills in the areas of Managed Care, Quality Improvement, Basic Research, and Executive Leadership. An emphasis is also placed on improving the skills of the fellow as an educator. Ongoing interactions and utilization of the resources of the Faculty Development Fellowship, Madigan and the Department of Medical Education, University of Washington help to meet these goals as well.
