Tobacco Cessation

Madigan staff has worked closely with commanders and community agencies to create and support a JBLM-wide culture of health and wellness. This includes increasing awareness among staff, patients, and visitors about healthy living programs available and the positive impact of healthy lifestyle choices. An important component of this effort is Madigan’s tobacco cessation activities.

On January 1, 2013, Madigan implemented a tobacco-free campus policy. Use of any tobacco product, including the new electronic nicotine delivery devices, is prohibited anywhere on the Madigan campuses. This policy applies to visitors, employees and patients. Madigan employees are offered free cessation medication and counseling through the Occupational Health Clinic. Inpatients are prescribed nicotine replacement therapy as appropriate, and outpatient cessation appointments are available in all primary care clinics.

The move toward a tobacco-free campus was publicized widely through various types of media including Facebook, the NW Guardian, the Puget Sound Military Appointment Center, job announcements, and Madigan’s intranet and external website. A countdown calendar to a tobacco-free campus was placed prominently on the Madigan’s intranet along with a taped message of support from the Madigan commander and a link to Frequently Asked Questions about why, when, and how the policy would be implemented.
