About

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that treats cancer using strong beams of energy to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing and spreading. Radiation therapy treatments are one of the most common treatments for cancer and are often part of the main treatment for certain kinds of cancers. Radiation therapy can be given via external treatments or implanted/internal treatments and can be used alone or with other treatments such as surgery or chemotherapy. Small doses of radiation may be administered daily over a period of several days to several weeks. The Radiation Oncologist will select the type of therapy best suited for the patient’s particular type of cancer.

The Radiation Oncology Service is a full-spectrum clinic that treats cancer with radiation, for referred patients of all ages in both the outpatient clinic setting and inpatient care with expert consultative services.

The Radiation Oncology Clinic employs state-of-the-art image guided and motion gated treatments and has two high energy linear accelerators capable of intensity modulated radiotherapy and volumetric modulated arc-therapy modalities (treatments using an external radiation beam). Recently, the clinic added a state-of-the-art linear accelerator capable of delivering highly focused treatments including Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy. The clinic has also expanded to provide High Dose Rate Brachytherapy (an outpatient treatment using an implanted or internally inserted radiation source).

Our mission is to ensure that these modalities are used to provide the highest standard of radiation therapy for Madigan's patients while delivering quality education, research and process improvement programs and always caring for patients with compassion.
