Health Physics Service

About Us

The Health Physics Service ensures radiation safety throughout Madigan Army Medical Center and manages the radioactive material permit issued through the Defense Health Agency’s Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Broad Scope license. This includes both ionizing (ie x-rays, radioactive materials) and non-ionizing (ie LASERs, Radiofrequency) forms of radiation. We accomplish this through; education of best practices of handling radiation sources, reducing total radiation dose as low as reasonably achievable, monitoring occupational radiation dose, monitoring patient radiation dose, ensuring efficacy of personal protective equipment, internal surveys and audits in use areas, safe disposal and storage of radioactive materials, fetal dose assessments, annual radiographic compliance surveys. Additionally, health physics provides radiological advisory capabilities in the event of radiological or nuclear event on Joint Base Lewis-McChord as a part of Radiological Advisory Management Team.

Directions

Health Physics Service is located in the Madigan Annex and can be reached by taking I-5 to Exit 122, the Madigan exit into JBLM. Continue on Jackson Avenue, turning left on S I St (across from the hospital tower), right on Wilson Avenue, left on W Johnson Ave. Parking lot is to the right.
