About

Diagnostic Ultrasound is an imaging modality which utilizes high frequency sound waves to evaluate living tissue. These sound waves are not able to be heard and pass harmlessly through the tissue layers of the body. Ultrasound can be utilized to evaluate almost any structure in the body, but cannot pass through bone or gas. Since ultrasound is a real time examination, it can also be used to visualize structures in motion. The examination will be performed by a sonographer. A Sonographer is specifically trained in anatomy, physiology, disease processes and how they appear on ultrasound. While they are the one who performs the examination, the Sonographer cannot give results or discuss the findings with the patient. Once completed, the ultrasound examination will be interpreted by a Radiologist. The report from the Radiologist will be sent electronically to the patients’ primary care manager who ordered the ultrasound.
